Deb and Dani Meet Deb Eldredge, D.V.M.

I have always loved to write despite an English teacher in high school who told me it wouldn’t work for me. My first paid work was for Chronicle of the Horse – same haiku and also Cornell Polo write ups. Veterinary school came next fulfilling my goal to have “animals be my life”. Being the first recipient of the Gentle Doctor Award remains a highlight of my life.

My pet writing career began in Michigan with a barter arrangement – a column a week for a local free newspaper in return for a pie. It was a great deal and I never looked back! I was one of the first columnists for GoodDog! and Catsumer Reports and stayed with them until the death of publisher Ross Becker. My first Maxwell from the Dog Writers Association of America was for poetry in 1994.

Dogs In Review gave me my next regular column and I have had articles published in Ranch Dog Trainer, Dog World, Dog Fancy, Cat Fancy, Cats, Catnip, Clean Run,, and breed magazines for Belgian Tervuren, Kuvasz and Pembroke Welsh Corgis. I was also a consumer side writer for With Deb DeVona I now write the Performance column for the Mayflower Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club magazine, the Corgi Cryer. This column won a Maxwell in 2009.

I have been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time for some great books. Pills for Pets won a Muse Medallion from the Cat Writers Association and was a finalist for a Maxwell. Cancer and Your Pet, co-authored with Margaret Bonham, did the same. Everything Guide to Dog Health with Kim Thornton was a finalist as well. With my daughter, I won a Maxwell for Head of the Class. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi in the Happy, Healthy Pet series for Wiley/Howell update was done by me as well as updates on both the Dog Owner’s Home Veterinary Handbook and the Cat Owner’s Home Veterinary Handbook. The updated cat version won a Muse Medallion as well as the special Hartz Vitamin Award from the CWA.

member, Veterinary News NetworkI have had multiple nominations for columns and articles over the years in both the CWA and DWAA contests as well as the awards noted above.

The best feeling is when I get a letter or an email from someone telling me how my article or book helped their pet.
